Acrylic vs. Canvas

It’s a question we get every so often.. what is the difference between an acrylic print and a canvas print? There are significant differences and advantages/disadvantages to both but before we get into those let’s discuss the materials and process involved in each.

Acrylic Photo Prints
The acrylic print is referred to by several names such as acrylic face or photo mount and the general acrylic name is often referred to as plexiglas (plexiglass), lucite or perspex which are just brand names of acrylic (everything you wanted to know about acrylic here!). There are also two distinct processes of creating an acrylic print – direct printing on to the material vs printing onto paper and then face mounting to acrylic (the acrylic and print are adhered with 1/8 – 1/4″ acrylic in front of the print. The face mount process is a more difficult process and more expensive, but well worth it.

We are firm believers in the face mount method which provides greater color pop and vibrancy. Why? For two reasons really – one, colors always looks best printed on high quality white paper and two, the face mount takes advantage of the reflective quality of acrylic. Acrylic has the unusual property of keeping a beam of light reflected within its surfaces which is what creates that WOW factor the first time you see an acrylic print done this way. Great color vibrancy with a near 3-D effect. No other display technique can match an acrylic face mount which is why this technique is growing quickly in popularity among professional photographers.

Fine Art Prints

Fine Art Paper is acid-free, 100% cotton, single-side coated paper showing a natural white finish with a slightly textured matte surface has a soft velvet-like feel. A high-quality, mould-made paper, it is ideal for digital fine art reproductions.

“Fine art photography” is basically speculative work created without any restrictions or client influence. The imagery is far more revealing of the photographer’s personality than other types of photography. It is photography with fewer aesthetic restrictions which allows unlimited freedom to pursue unique visual expressions and ideas. It’s personal work that’s intended for galleries, museums or collectors.

The term “fine art” is often times used for promotional or marketing purposes. For example, you see many wedding photographers describe their work as “fine art photography”. Certainly this sounds great to a prospective customer, but it’s really not fine art photography unless it was a piece created by the artist for exhibition purposes.

Metal Prints

Metal prints have become the rage in the photography market in recent times. They are in fact a great enhancement with respect to making your regular photograph look very beautiful, vibrant and luminescent. Photographs as well as your arts can be printed on metal to not only enhance its beauty but also for preserving your valuable photos and arts for a long time.

A metal print of your favorite photograph can be easily created by visiting a laboratory that undertakes metal printing process. This process typically converts your digital photographs into metal prints by infusing the photograph on the metal (aluminum). When speaking about infusing the photograph, it does not imply that the images are printed on the actual metal surface. Instead special chromatic dyes are used in the process. These dyes are infused directly into the polymer coating/aluminum photo sheets using pressure and heat to create Metal Prints. The final photograph with metal print makes it more vibrant and glowing in comparison to your normal photograph.

Metal prints can be kept or hanged in any part of the house but should not be exposed to direct sunlight. In case you need to creatively hang it in the garden, you can do so. However keep in mind to not expose your metal prints to the direct rays of the sun.

There are many benefits of using metal prints for your photographs and arts. The colors that are used in the process of metal printing are extremely lively and bright. They bring out a certain depth, luminosity and color quality that your regular paper photograph would not achieve. Since your picture is infused onto the special dyes/coating, the final prints give an archive value. The durability of metal prints is considerably greater than your regular photographs and hence there is no need for a frame or glass to protect it. These photographs can hence be kept in your safe custody for a long time or passed on to the next generation with ease.

Metal prints are water proof i.e. they can withstand exposure to water. Hence Metal Prints can be conveniently hanged on your kitchen, bathroom walls or any other walls that you feel are exposed to moisture. This is a great advantage when compared to paper photographs, as they tend to damage when exposed to water or moisture.
